Veteran Honored for 10,540 Hours of Service to Fellow Vets

Military veteran Jimmy Sparks of Tupelo was honored on Tuesday for more than 10,540 hours of volunteer service to his fellow veterans. The event was the Northeast Mississippi Veterans’ Forum, sponsored by the Lee County Board of Supervisors’ Veterans’ Service Office.

Serving as a volunteer driver, Sparks and his wife Nancy have logged those hours in more than 20 years, ensuring veterans arrive safely at their appointments. VA Medical Center Clinical Operations Director and Director of Volunteer Services noted in this presentation that Sparks had logged more than 1,240 trips since 2006.

Sixty members, to include multiple local organizations, spouses and caregivers, attended the luncheon meeting where seven speakers discussed a range of topics from counseling to VA benefits and challenges facing fellow veterans.

Lee County Board of Supervisors Veteran Service Officer Ashleigh Pharr presided at the event held at the American Legion Post 49 in Tupelo. Pharr reminds veterans that their office at the Lee County Supervisors building in downtown Tupelo is open Monday through Friday to assist them with challenges and opportunities, and encourages them to become aware of the services available to them.
