How do I get a summary of my benefits letter and why do I need it??

Go to https://www.va.gov/:

  1. Log in using an existing account or create a new one
  2. Select Manage
  3. Select Documents and Records
  4. Select VA Letters
  5. Select Benefit Summary
  6. Select Generate Letter
  7. On the Benefit Summary Letter page, select all checkboxes except for “Your current monthly award amount”
  8. Download the letter using Adobe Acrobat Reader

How long do you have to serve in the military to be considered a veteran?

You must have served a minimum of 24 months of active duty to be considered a veteran. If you become disabled because of your time in the service, there is no minimum length of service to qualify for VA benefits.

What benefits do honorably discharged veterans get?

If you received an honorable discharge, you’re eligible for all VA benefits, including disability compensation, health care, and education-related benefits such as the Montgomery GI Bill program and Post-9/11 GI Bill program.

What can cause you to lose your VA benefits?

Only in cases where fraud can be proven or a serious mistake was made can your benefits be considered for termination. If you have not been receiving VA disability for ten or more years and VA determines that your injury or illness is not service-connected, your benefits may be threatened.

What is a DD form 214?

DD Form 214, also known as a DD 214, is a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty issued by the United States Department of Defense. It’s a military service record that summarizes a member’s active military service and is given to all veterans when they retire, separate, or are discharged from the Armed Forces.

Who qualifies for a DD214?

DD Form 214 / DD214 / DD 214 Discharge Papers and Separation Documents. A Report of Separation is generally issued when a service member performs active duty or at least 90 consecutive days of active duty training.

What death benefits do veterans get?

A veterans burial allowance helps pay for transportation, funeral, and burial costs for an eligible veteran. If you qualify, the VA will repay a fixed amount for these costs.

Ashleigh Pharr

  • EDUCATION

    She holds a BS from Bellevue University in Human Resource Management.

  • EXPERIENCE

    She is a native to Fulton, MS but joined the Air Force in 2011 and served active duty until July 2020. Her key assignments were 35th FSS Eielson AFB AK and 24th Intelligence Squadron at Ramstein AB Germany.

  • ABOUT ASHLEIGH

    Ashleigh Pharr- Ashleigh serves as the Lee County Veteran Service Officer. Her role consists of helping veterans and their families receive the benefits they have earned and deserve. When she is not serving our local veterans, she spends most of her free time with her two kids, Arya and Greyson.

Jimmy Sparks

  • EXPERIENCE

    Jimmy began his service to this country 36 years ago. He is a native of Lee County and served active-duty Navy from 1963-1968 then transitioned to the Army national guard as part of the 185th Aviation unit.

  • ABOUT JIMMY

    He retired from his career at Cooper Tire and with the national guard in 2006.  Just a year after retirement he began volunteering with the VA and Lee county Veteran service office as “ the driver”.  Jimmy volunteers his time and driving skills to getting our veterans to and from their VA scheduled appointments. A job he does with a smile and full heart.

Cindi Irwin

  • ABOUT CINDI

    Cindi Irwin- Cindi is the daughter of a WWII and Korean war veteran. She currently serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Veteran Services.

  • HER ROLE

    Cindi specializes in survivor benefits such as DIC and survivors’ pension. Cindi visits all the Lee County nursing facilities ensuring the veterans, and their spouses feel supported.
